The Recruiter keeps to the rules and takes his turn with the last chamber, and the gun goes off, killing him. Jun-ho storms the motel and finds Gi-hun with the body. At first he treats Gi-hun as a murder suspect, but they find Woo-seok tied up in another room. Woo-seok breaks down as he explains that he made a mistake in the hand game and Mr. Kim chose to lose on purpose so he would live.

Later, Jun-ho finally sits down with Gi-hun and Woo-seok. He explains that he was the masked guard who asked Gi-hun about a man named Hwang In-ho on the island, and that In-ho is his brother. Jun-ho does not mention that he knows In-ho is the Front Man. Gi-hun explains that killing the masked leader won't end anything, because the games exist for the wealthy VIPs. Gi-hun doesn't trust the police, and Woo-seok agrees, but both men want revenge. Gi-hun shows them a stash of black-market rifles, tells Woo-seok to round up people who can fight, and asks Jun-ho to quit his job and join them.

We also see how Gi-hun spends his prize money. He supports Sang-woo's mother, who now runs a fish shop, and Cheol, Sae-byeok's little brother, who lives with her. He is paying a broker to smuggle Sae-byeok's mother out of a North Korean prison camp. He even makes a silent phone call to his daughter, Ga-yeong, and hangs up without saying a word.

The episode also introduces several people who will soon join the games. Kang No-eul works in a costume at an amusement park and barely talks to her coworkers. She is a North Korean defector, and she pleads with a broker to keep looking for the baby daughter she left behind. He tells her, as kindly as he can, to give up. At the same park, portrait artist Park Gyeong-seok panics when his daughter, Na-yeon, collapses. She has leukemia, and the doctor says a new drug could help but insurance won't cover it. Jun-ho visits his mother at the memorial of In-ho's late wife and learns more about his family: In-ho is his stepbrother, he gave Jun-ho a kidney years ago, and he later took bribes when his wife got sick and lost his job.

No-eul hands in her resignation and makes a call. She gives her name and birthdate and is told where to wait for a pickup on October 31. She is about to join the games, but not as a player. Meanwhile, Woo-seok introduces a team of ex-military mercenaries led by a combat veteran called Kim. The plan is for Gi-hun to carry a tracker so the team can follow him wherever he is taken.

October 31 turns out to be Halloween, which makes sense: everyone at the Midnight Club party is wearing a mask. Woo-seok slips in with Gi-hun while Jun-ho and the mercenaries wait outside. The pink-suited guards appear, Woo-seok is stunned, and Gi-hun is led into a white limousine. As the Front Man speaks to him over a speaker, Gi-hun demands that he stop the games. The Front Man insists the players choose to come, and that the world keeps producing desperate people. Gi-hun says that's just a story rich people tell, and that they treat people like racehorses.

When the limo starts circling, the mercenaries try to stop it on the road, but a tire is blown out and snipers open fire on both chase cars. Seeing that he can't win this way, Gi-hun changes tactics and asks to be put back in the game. He taunts the Front Man, suggesting he is afraid of losing just like Oh Il-nam did. The Front Man compares him to a hero picking the red pill in The Matrix and agrees. Gi-hun is welcomed back as Player 456, and outside, Jun-ho's team switches to plan B.
