Season 2 opens moments after Season 1 ended. At the airport, Seong Gi-hun (Player 456) turns away from his flight to the U.S. while the Front Man warns him over the phone that he will regret it. In the taxi back to Seoul, Gi-hun asks the driver to stop and digs out the tracking device the organization had planted behind his ear. Somewhere else, Detective Hwang Jun-ho, who was shot and fell from the island cliff, wakes up in a hospital bed. His mother is overjoyed, but the first name he whispers is his brother's: In-ho.
Two years later, Jun-ho is working as a traffic cop. Over noodles, his old chief begs him to come back to Major Crimes and explains why nobody upstairs believed his story: no photos, no phone, no location for the island, just an untraceable bullet in his shoulder. Jun-ho claims he can't remember who shot him, but a flashback shows us it was his brother, Hwang In-ho, the Front Man. On his days off, Jun-ho goes out on the boat of Captain Park, the fisherman who pulled him from the sea, and checks island after island. After they nearly capsize in a dangerous stretch of whirlpools, Jun-ho finally tells the captain it's time to give up.
Gi-hun, meanwhile, is living like a hermit in a rundown motel, looking worn out and ill. He paid off his debt to his old loan shark, Mr. Kim, and then hired Mr. Kim's crew, including the young Choi Woo-seok, to watch every subway station in Seoul for the man in the suit who plays ddakji. Two years of searching have turned up nothing, but Gi-hun remembers he was recruited around this time of year, so he orders a citywide sweep from the first train to the last. Mr. Kim sweetens the deal by promising half of Gi-hun's one-billion-won reward to whoever finds the man.
It works. Mr. Kim and Woo-seok spot the Recruiter slapping a stranger at Jonggak Station and follow him to Tapgol Park. There he offers homeless people a cruel choice: a loaf of bread or a lottery scratch card, never both. When most pick the scratchers and lose, he crushes the bread in front of them and tells them they threw it away themselves. In a side scene, Jun-ho pulls over a speeding rental car, and the license comes back as Seong Gi-hun. Jun-ho traces the car to Sunshine Capital, Mr. Kim's company, and from there to the motel Gi-hun is using as his base. We also briefly see a pregnant young woman, Kim Jun-hee, ignoring a phone call at an OB-GYN clinic.
Instead of waiting for Gi-hun, Mr. Kim and Woo-seok try to grab the Recruiter themselves, and he beats them both senseless. They wake up tied to chairs with opera playing as he explains a new game, Rock, Paper, Scissors, Minus One: each player throws a shape with both hands, then pulls one hand back, and the remaining hands decide the round. The loser plays Russian roulette. Later he flips the odds so the gun holds five bullets instead of one. In the deciding round, Mr. Kim could have won but deliberately keeps both hands out, breaking the rules so he loses instead of Woo-seok. He is shot dead.
That rainy night, the Recruiter strolls into Gi-hun's motel and sits down to talk. He reveals he once worked inside the games, burning bodies, and was later given a gun. One day the losing player in front of him turned out to be his own father, and he shot him without hesitating. Gi-hun calls him nothing more than the organization's dog. The Recruiter answers with his own version of Russian roulette: one bullet, no re-spinning, the two of them taking turns until it fires. The key to meeting his boss is in his pocket, he says, and Gi-hun could simply shoot him and take it, but that would prove Gi-hun is trash like everyone else.
Click after click goes by, and the odds get worse each turn. Gi-hun survives his pull at 1 in 2 and hands the gun back, throwing the Recruiter's own taunts back at him. Only one chamber is left, and it holds the bullet. The Recruiter could break the rules and shoot Gi-hun, but that would make him exactly what he mocks. The episode ends with the gun in his hand.
