The finale, carded FINAL EPISODE, picks up after the car accident that closed episode 15. An ER team takes in an unconscious 35-year-old man. Intercut with the trauma bay is a memory from before the wedding: Baek Hyun-woo proposing to Hong Hae-in. She warns him that her family is nothing like his and that she won't be able to take his side against them. He can take hers, he answers, because marriage means sitting in one boat: if it capsizes, they sink together. At the hospital, Hyun-woo's family learns that his ribs and liver are badly hurt, but he is alive.
Captive at the hunting grounds
Hae-in wakes in a place she doesn't know, brought there against her will by Yoon Eun-sung. He says he used force because he refuses to watch Hyun-woo deceive and hurt her again. She tells him she saw a notebook sent from Germany, written in her hand, that contradicts his stories. Then she backs down: anyone could fake handwriting, she should have asked him first, and she just wants to go home. A helicopter comes at dawn, they will leave together and marry, and a professional manager can run the department store until she returns. She agrees.
Hyun-woo has already walked out of the ER to search for her, but snow and an unregistered plate have made the kidnapper impossible to track, even for the police. Word of Hae-in's disappearance is passed to Moh Seul-hee on purpose, with a hint that Mr. Yoon is involved: she will find Hae-in faster than anyone. A replay of episode 15 brings back Eun-sung's threat to send her to prison if she touches Hae-in again. When she calls to move the money in her safe, she learns he has converted all of it to dollars and taken it. Someone watching reports that she is on the move.
News comes that Pyeon Seong-uk's killer has mentioned an accomplice, though not by name. Eun-sung will likely try to leave the country. Kim Yang-gi, who is with Hyun-woo, scolds him for digging his own grave, and Hyun-woo's thanks for always standing by him only alarm Yang-gi more. They reach the Hong family's hunting grounds, and Hyun-woo goes in alone. Someone who knows the property points him to a kitchen side door and mentions vehicles coming and going lately.
At the villa, Seul-hee confronts her son and demands her money and the file. Eun-sung names it for her: his proof that she killed the chairman. Then a secret he has kept for years comes out.
A flashback shows a boy visiting his mother at a beach, told to take a taxi back, just before screams go up for Hong Su-wan after a boat accident. Eun-sung says he saw her break the boat and kept quiet, believing that if the children died, she would come for him sooner. She never came. She replies that she regrets only one thing: that Hae-in didn't die that day too. He tells her the file is in his drawer, behind a code set to her birthday, but he keeps the money, throwing back her claim that it was her way of loving him. Then he notices that Hae-in is gone.
Hyun-woo finds her. She notices his injured face before anything else and makes him lean on her. He tells her to run for the main gate, where his friend waits. She refuses to leave her rescuer behind. She knows everything now, she says, including what he meant to her, and she owes him a proper apology. "We're in the same boat tonight," she tells him, handing his proposal back.
Eun-sung catches them and begs her to come to him, promising to overlook all of it. Hae-in answers that he made her uneasy even when she remembered nothing, and now she knows why. He screams that his life was ruined because of her, and when someone tells him it is over, he insists it isn't. Hae-in says she will never go with him. With police ordering him to drop the rifle, Eun-sung says he will take her even if he has to kill her, and the bullet meant for her hits Hyun-woo. On the way to the hospital, his blood pressure falling, Hyun-woo tells her not to cry and promises he isn't going anywhere.
Two families, one beach
Their goodbye before her surgery replays from episode 14, when she asked what would happen if she forgot him. Over it, a voice admits she did exactly that: forgot him, treated him as a stranger, hurt him. Elsewhere, someone asking about a commotion learns that Eun-sung has just died. The dialogue never says how, though published recaps report that police shot him in the standoff. Then comes a memory of a small boy begging his mother to come back soon.
That night Hae-in's parents, Hong Beom-jun and Kim Seon-hwa, remember the beach the family visited every year until the accident. One of them recognizes it from the Baeks' album, replayed from episode 12, about the Marine Corps camp where Hyun-woo once saved a drowning child. Then the bad news reaches them.
At the hospital, Hyun-woo's parents, Baek Du-gwan and Jeon Bong-ae, introduce themselves to a Hae-in who doesn't know them. She tells them he was shot because of her, and they comfort her instead. One of Hae-in's parents confesses to the Baeks: they lost a son young, blamed Hae-in, and are ashamed. A Baek parent confirms the camp story, a broken-down boat and a rescued girl, and one of Hae-in's parents says the beach and date look the same. As Hyun-woo's heart stops on the operating table, the flashback completes itself: Hyun-woo is the boy who pulled Hae-in out of the water. One of Hae-in's parents grieves how Hyun-woo was treated, and a Baek parent tells them to let the past go and pray.
Seul-hee spends no time on grief. Since her son is dead, she claims his 15.9 percent stake as her own, orders another 7 percent bought with the secret fund, and plans to keep Pione Investment on her side by promising to sell everything within a year. With every problem pinned on Eun-sung, she expects nothing to stop a grand inauguration as chairwoman.
Hyun-woo wakes up
Hyun-woo survives a long surgery but doesn't wake. Hae-in keeps vigil while a replay from episode 15 throws her own cold words back at her. She tells him she hasn't recovered all her memories, but she understands now why her heart ached the first time she saw him, and she vows to live on water until he opens his eyes. He does, and she apologizes for not recognizing him. He says he forgot too: how much he loved her and that he promised to stay through everything, and tells her he is sorry and loves her. The families burst in, and one of them happily assumes his declaration of love was meant for them.
Yang-gi introduces himself to Hae-in, who knows him from a notebook as Hyun-woo's divorce lawyer. He mostly tried to talk his client out of it, he admits. Asked why they divorced, he stumbles over busy schedules, then says the reason no longer matters. He tells her that if she wants no regrets, she must not let Hyun-woo go.
In her pre-surgery notebook, Hae-in finds an answer Hyun-woo has written under one of her lines: he won't let her let go. She scolds the supposedly unconscious patient until he cracks a smile and pleads, "Don't make me laugh. It hurts." The parents leave the lovebirds alone and head off for spicy fish stew and makgeolli. Later, Hae-in accuses him of inventing a husband too good to be true: top of his law class, boxing champion, Marine Corps. He corrects the last part to the Special Guard Team, and she is sure the boxing title is made up.
Seul-hee in court
Hong Man-dae's children, Hong Beom-seok among them, promise their late father they will take back what is theirs. The numbers are bad: Seul-hee holds 45.1 percent against the family's frozen 39.3 percent, and Pione is likely to stay with her. The family's answer is a nullity suit over the 13.3 percent she bought with secret funds, which are illegal. Grace Ko says she has already done her part, and a flashback shows how Hyun-woo's songs and a package from Germany reached Hae-in past Eun-sung's mail checks, and Grace calls herself the couple's love messenger. Cheon Da-hye wants them both to testify. Grace sees no point in going down with anyone, but Da-hye wants an honest life, not Eun-sung's loveless one.
At the Evergreen Hope Orphanage, Da-hye shows Hong Soo-cheol where they first met. Left in an apple crate one winter, she had no one to wait for until his visits and the strawberry shortcake that came with them. She still has the doll she took from him back then. He never came back, so now it is his turn to wait for her. She asks him to look after their son, Hong Geon-u, and promises to be a good wife when she returns. Soo-cheol refuses to say goodbye and vows to spend everything on the best lawyers in the country.
In court, Hyun-woo, now the family's lawyer, lays out how Eun-sung laundered 900 billion won through a shell company and how Seul-hee inherited his shares and bought more. He adds a two-trillion-won land scam with a double contract designed to frame the Hongs. The defense blames everything on the dead son. Da-hye testifies that she married Soo-cheol on Seul-hee's orders, but she has no proof, and the defense calls her a fraud suspect.
Then Hae-in takes the stand. The defendant's son kidnapped her three weeks ago, she says, and she overheard mother and son tie Seul-hee to the boat accident 25 years ago and to her grandfather's death. When the defense calls her unreliable after brain surgery, the plaintiffs produce a video. A flashback shows the file copied and put back so Seul-hee never knew. The court watches the footage, replayed from episode 8, of her poisoning Man-dae, and she is arrested for attempted murder.
The news confirms the rest. The Queens family is reinstated, Hyun-woo has proved the investment fraud, the family has recovered every lost share, and those tied to the fraud are convicted. Locked up, Seul-hee keeps shouting for her lawyer until the people around her lose patience and someone tells the others to stomp on her, before a voice calls a halt.
Hae-in's answer
At home, Soo-cheol raises Geon-u alone until Da-hye returns, and Hong Beom-ja dresses up for a summons from Kim Yeong-song. She expects to be let down gently. Instead he admits he has never properly dated anyone and would like to cook meat for her on hard days and bake madeleines on boring ones. He invites her to come to him whenever life feels hard or dull, and she says she will.
Meanwhile, divorce is in the air. Park Chun-sik met a first love at a reunion and bought three insurance policies from her, and his wife admits she is the one who hit him. Another woman, sure her husband abroad has a second wife named Jenny, learns that Jenny is his 60-year-old professor and that he wants his wife to know he loves her. The couple she calls Mom and Dad hand her a gift and send her to the U.S.
At Queens Department Store, Secretary Na Chae-yeon notes that Hae-in's plan for a children's plaza is one she had before the surgery too. Over lunch Hae-in says she isn't ready to marry: his love runs hot enough to fry chicken, hers only warm enough for coffee. When a message reports that Director Baek has booked a restaurant famous for proposals, she spends the evening planning a kind refusal. He never calls, and when she rings him, he is at a company dinner.
That night her worst memory comes back: a fight over an emptied room and its glow-in-the-dark stars, with her accusing him of blaming her for the miscarriage while he insists he never did. The next day she tells Hyun-woo she would have refused him, but remembering has made her less afraid. They let small things break them, she says, and she won't hide in her room resenting him again. He would take another bullet for her without fear, he says, but he feared they would wear each other out. All he can promise is to stay and mend what breaks. He asks her to marry him, and she says of course, though she sets the pace: five handholds before a hug, breakfast every morning, a walk every day, a trip every season.
Every day after
At a correctional facility, Da-hye apologizes to Geon-u, and Soo-cheol boasts that the boy can ride a tricycle now. Outside, someone who finds the spring air oddly cold is collected for a meal. A voice-over says they forgave the people they once resented. Someone warns Mr. Kim that at this pace their first kiss will arrive along with the wrinkles.
At Queen's Boxing Gym, a coach quotes Muhammad Ali on living each day as if it were the last, and someone misses Hae-in, the landlord who never knew she owned the place. Somewhere else, someone who let a brother take the chairmanship insists that ramyeon is paradise, and kimchi arrives just in time. A runaway vehicle sets everyone shouting about the brakes, and Du-gwan is called by name. The voice-over talks about stopping to take in the view while time slips faster.
A card then reads HONG HAE-IN 22 AUGUST 1990, 7 APRIL 2074, with the line that spending a life together has been a miracle. Over it, two voices imagine the day only one of them is left and say the other can come to meet them, so it won't be frightening at all. "Because we'll be together," they finish in unison. A thank-you card to Lee Hang-na and a closing message asking viewers to love the people around them close the series.
Thoughts
The finale works best when it rhymes. The boat in that first proposal becomes the boat Seul-hee broke 25 years ago, then the boat Hae-in climbs back into at the hunting grounds. The boy who pulled her from the water turns out to be the man who takes the bullet. The show has been seeding the beach rescue since episode 12. Getting both families into one hospital to work it out together is a satisfying payoff. The reunion at the bedside, with Hyun-woo cracking up over his own notebook reply, is the series at its warmest.
The weaker stretch is the last third, which hands out a happy ending to nearly every couple in quick succession. The divorce comedy and the Jenny misunderstanding feel like filler in a 110-minute episode. Eun-sung's ending is also oddly abrupt: a man who drove the whole plot gets one line of news and a memory of a boy waiting for his mother. That memory is the point, I think: the show wants us to see what waiting without hope did to him. Still, his death feels like a loose thread being tied off.
As a whole, Queen of Tears earns its title. Hae-in cries often, but the series is really about two people who stopped knocking on each other's doors and had to relearn how. The second proposal, with Hyun-woo promising repairs rather than perfection and Hae-in negotiating hugs by the handhold, says that better than any grand gesture. The memorial card is a gentle way to end: a long life, and a promise that the one left behind won't stay alone for long.
