Eun-sung writes Hae-in a new past

After the episode card, a voice counts slowly to ten while Hong Hae-in's voice keeps repeating Baek Hyun-woo's name, the reminder that closed episode 14. At the hospital, two staff members wonder why Hae-in's doctor and nurses were suddenly replaced. The man calling himself her fiancé spoke with the director and donated generously, and staff have been told to keep quiet or be sued. A second man also claims to be her fiancé.

In her room, Yoon Eun-sung supplies the missing years. Her ex-husband followed her there, he says, pushed her to rewrite her will and, when she refused, was behind the truck that hit their car. They were not inside, but Eun-sung claims he hurt his hand smashing the window because he thought she was: Hyun-woo's injury, and Hyun-woo's story. He adds that she tried to end her life when Hyun-woo cheated and wanted a divorce. Hae-in calls her old self pathetic, and Eun-sung vows to protect her now that she is single.

In an interrogation room, an investigator lays out the case: Hyun-woo was seen at the bus stop near Sambang Reservoir, and his hair was in the victim's car. A knife found near the scene carries his prints and the victim's blood. Hyun-woo says the victim never showed up and the hair was planted. A killer would not leave his weapon behind, he argues, and a slip would cut a palm, not the back of a hand he injured breaking a car window in Germany. The investigator tells the attorney to confess for a lighter sentence. Two lines then replay: Hae-in's old plea from episode 7 that he not save her if it happens again, and Eun-sung's tale of the suicide attempt.

Home to a family she does not know

A card reads ONE MONTH LATER. Hae-in returns to her family, and her mother, Kim Seon-hwa, asks whether she recognizes her. Hae-in greets each by title: her father, Hong Beom-jun; her mother; and her aunt, Hong Beom-ja. Her brother, Hong Soo-cheol, has to introduce himself, and a meal sometime is suggested. When Eun-sung says she should go home and rest, someone is told he has no right to butt in, and a Mr. Hong is told to mind his manners in front of Mr. Yoon.

In flashback, Eun-sung's briefing fills in the rest. By his account, the late chairman, tired of his family fighting over money, gave him the chairmanship, and the family was glad to hear Hae-in was dying. Hae-in answers that she doubts her family were ever close enough to be happy to see her. They called only to secure her vote for the stockholders' meeting, he says. Since she came to a major surgery alone, Hae-in concludes she lived a lonely life. Eun-sung says they only ever had each other.

Back at the arrival, someone begs her to trust family, not him. Instead she brings up Soo-cheol's talisman, meant to weaken her energy, and a lawsuit over the Gwanggyo department store. Losing her memory, she says, does not erase the bad blood. Told that her husband belongs there instead, she corrects them: ex-husband, the one who drew up divorce papers in secret and is now, she hears, jailed for murder.

A replay from episode 14 has Hae-in asking Hyun-woo to be there when she wakes. Now Eun-sung asks why she wants to go home when he has found her a place. She hopes living as she used to will bring her memory back. He warns that her parents fought her reinstatement, then holds her to a promise he says she made: marriage after the surgery, with the wedding left to him.

In the room where Chairman Hong collapsed, Eun-sung asks Moh Seul-hee whether she arranged the crash before the surgery. She admits it; Hae-in survived, and she had warned him she would keep getting hurt while he stayed near her. Eun-sung counters that the painting he gave the chairman let him see what Seul-hee did in that room, and he has evidence. Touch Hae-in again, he says, and he will jail her the way he jailed Hyun-woo. "I'm your obstacle now."

The detectives, and a visit to inmate 9971

Elsewhere, someone fears Hae-in will marry Eun-sung; another voice says she won't and admits to having her watched. The watchers are Hong Gil-dong's Detective Agency, led by Private Investigator Hong, a former comic book store owner. Her assistants, one of them Mr. Nam, handle stakeouts and disguises, and a haggle over meal money follows: 8,000 won is tight when seafood jajangmyeon costs 12,000 won. A man the team calls sir explains that they followed Hae-in to Germany and reported back to him.

Hae-in looks around and asks why it is so empty. What she can gather about her marriage is thin: separate bedrooms, the same taste in music. If she cannot know herself, she reasons, she should at least know her enemy.

So she visits Hyun-woo in prison. He asks about the surgery, the treatment, the pain. She mocks his concern and says she knows why he married her and how he planned the divorce. He tells her none of what Eun-sung said is true. She believes only what she has confirmed, she replies: the hidden papers and his status as a murder suspect. When he asks why she came if not out of doubt, she admits to curiosity and says they will never meet again.

Hyun-woo will not give up, he says, and will stay beside her, which she calls rich from a man behind bars. He apologizes for not being there when she woke and promises to get out. As time is called on inmate 9971, he asks only that she eat well and stay healthy. A card reads KOREA CORRECTIONAL SERVICE. Outside, Hae-in calls him cunning and eloquent, then asks for nausea medicine because her heart is racing.

Eun-sung is waiting at her place and demands to know where she went. Hae-in will not say, and tells him nobody comes in without her permission, him included. He pleads that she has been in danger. By his own account, she notes, Hyun-woo was behind it, and Hyun-woo is locked up.

At Queens, staff whisper about the marriage until someone reminds them of their NDA. A staff member thanks Hae-in for paying for the surgery that left a child once called Cho-rong, now named So-yul, healthy. Her former secretary, Na Chae-yeon, thanks her for coming back before the installments on her purchase were paid off, and offers herself as a human external hard drive. Another employee thanks Hae-in for flowers and help when the employee's mother died, and someone starts to credit Director Baek before stopping. Hae-in decides she was kind all along, while flashes of her old self grilling staff suggest otherwise. She wants Secretary Na back and will handle the transfer.

The green fiber

Hyun-woo's side combs the prosecution's evidence record and finds what was left out: an analysis of a green fiber that is not his. Hyun-woo confirms the knife is his, missing from home days before the Germany trip. CCTV, bus dashcams and cameras near the fishing spot get checked.

On the morning of the hearing, the breakfast table is banned from wrapping, dunking, mixing or dropping food. Nothing may feel ominous. Soo-cheol drops something and cheerfully admits it, then wraps and dunks anyway.

In court, the prosecution places Hyun-woo near the scene between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. and charges him with murder, and he pleads not guilty. His defense points to green acrylic on the knife, then to footage of a man in green holding it. The same man burns a t-shirt, gloves and clothing about 2 km away; the burned fiber matches the knife's, and the t-shirt carries the victim's blood and DNA. When the prosecutor calls it circumstantial, the defense produces photos and videos the killer took himself. In flashback, someone reasons a hired killer would record proof to get paid, sends a fake delivery link and clones his phone. Over the prosecution's objection, the judge admits the evidence.

A news report follows: the Busan Coast Guard has arrested a man surnamed Yoo trying to stow away on a fishing boat. He says he acted alone. Hyun-woo is acquitted at the first hearing and released.

A homecoming in Yongdu-ri

Outside the prison, Hae-in waits with Secretary Na, worried about her stalker going free; the secretary suggests Hae-in is the stalker here. Baek Mi-seon throws her arms around her baby brother. Hae-in takes notes: an amicable family, no tofu. After a moment's panic that he saw her, she decides to follow them.

At the Yongdu-ri Supermarket, a half-price banner for Hyun-woo's release goes up, and Baek Du-gwan ends up giving everything away. Soo-cheol, staying with the Baeks to avoid his mother, is among the crowd. Hyun-woo arrives and apologizes; his father asks why, when he did nothing wrong. It begins to snow, and Jeon Bong-ae has made his favorite sweet red-bean porridge. Watching, Secretary Na tells Hae-in true love starts with wondering what his deal is, and adds, "Your heart lies where your body goes."

At a hospital abroad, staff puzzle over a notebook pulled from the trash, in a language they cannot read. Mr. Baek's attorney, someone recalls, called from Korea asking for one back.

Beom-ja turns up in Yongdu-ri to celebrate, bringing gifts and a washing machine as grand prize. One villager envies her three marriages, and others press Kim Yeong-song to meet a kindergarten teacher. At the community hall party, Baek Hyeon-tae emcees, Hyun-woo cuts tofu, and Yeong-song wins the washer and gives it to the villagers.

Outside, Beom-ja stops him. Grab opportunities, she says, because she is leaving and won't come back. When he asks if she is remarrying, she spells it out: she likes him. Her wireless microphone is still on, and the whole hall hears. As she flees, voices inside urge Yeong-song to go after her.

The letter

Eun-sung learns Hyun-woo has applied for reinstatement and can't legally be refused. Worse, the LPs will meet in New York to vote on dismissing the chairman over the financial documents. He tells the bank to double the earlier purchase, bringing it to 4.2 percent, in one go so they cannot oust him. On the other side, someone notes he is finally spending the secret fund, and new evidence of a two-trillion-won investment fraud has arrived from Cheon Da-hye.

A man in a car demands Da-hye's money and the USB she hid, then tells her Seul-hee has had enough of her. Soo-cheol comes after them, shouting for her release, and takes a beating while she begs him to run. His boxing lesson from episode 11 replays: exaggerate, wait for the opening, then strike. By the end, Da-hye is calling the police from the Yongdu-ri railroad as he lies still, begging him not to go. She tells him she loves him; he answers that he loves her too.

At Queens, Hae-in finds Hyun-woo reinstated and asks him to resign. He reminds her she once told him he would always be her type and she would fall for him again. She calls him shameless, forbids him to say her name and pulls free.

A package from Grünwald Medical Center arrives. Grace Ko greets Hae-in, claiming to be the person she trusted most, and is refused a hug. As Hae-in leaves, Grace wonders why such sharp instincts still miss Eun-sung's lies. Then Hae-in receives an emailed invitation from herself.

At an empty aquarium, she finds Hyun-woo, also invited in her name. An announcement begins their wedding. Two old videos play: Hyun-woo telling his future self that all he needs is Hae-in, and Hae-in wishing her future self a life with him.

Staff say Ms. Hong booked the place a month ago, as she did four years earlier. Remembering their date there in episode 8, Hyun-woo realizes she arranged it then. A note in her own words tells him not to skip the wedding. Would she remarry a cheater, she wonders. She would not, he agrees, had he cheated. He asks her to doubt everyone, Eun-sung included.

Eun-sung's window story nags at Hae-in over drinks with him. A camera app flags unwatched footage. Eun-sung proposes they move to the U.S., since both were abandoned by their families. She asks if she really was, tells him they will talk when he is sober, and leaves her question unasked.

She gets Hyun-woo's number from Secretary Na and arranges to meet. Then she opens the package addressed to her: a letter to Hyun-woo, written before the surgery. If she dies, he should miss her through four seasons, then love again. If she forgets him, he should keep loving her until she falls for him again. It then addresses Hae-in herself, listing his habits over flashes of their past, and saying, "Baek Hyun-woo is the person I want to remember forever." She sobs her apology to him by name.

On the phone, Hyun-woo tells her to stay where she is; he will come to her. She says his name and apologizes again. The episode closes on a crash: a bus cuts Hae-in off from view and a car hits Hyun-woo. Over footage from Germany, the agency's report also plays out. Eun-sung nursed her diligently, but Hae-in kept refusing his help. He is pining in vain, and could lash out once that sinks in.

Thoughts

The letter is the episode's engine, and it works because it is so specific. Hae-in does not just ask to be remembered; she warns her future self that he nags, is hard to resist when he cries and should keep his sleeves down. Set against Eun-sung's tidy, borrowed history, which even steals Hyun-woo's injured hand, the letter shows how the show defines love: knowing the small stuff. The prison visit lands for the same reason. Her racing heart misread as nausea is a good joke with a real ache in it.

Eun-sung admitting to Seul-hee that he framed Hyun-woo changes the shape of things. He is no longer just lying to Hae-in; he has said it out loud to the one person with every reason to use it against him. Meanwhile Grace's aside suggests she sees through him, Da-hye has handed over the fraud evidence, and the LPs are circling. I'm less sure what the TRUST CAMERA notice is doing, but it was framed too deliberately to be decoration. Then comes the closing crash, delivered alongside the detective's warning that Eun-sung could become dangerous. With Hae-in's memory apparently back, the timing is cruel: she finally says his name and means it, and he is the one who gets hit.
