A card reads THREE YEARS AGO. On their honeymoon, Hong Hae-in and Baek Hyun-woo stroll through a cemetery set inside a park. One of them spots an old man at a grave whom the other cannot see. Hyun-woo announces he will never be one of those movie husbands who bring flowers to a late wife. If she dies first, he will last one more day and then follow her. She waves it off.

A narrating voice reflects that happy couples make promises they cannot keep, until a brutal decision has to be made. Then episode 13's final scene is shown again. Hae-in refuses to choose between losing her memory and dying, and Hyun-woo begs her simply to live.

After the episode card, Yoon Eun-sung is leaving to see Hae-in in Germany. His mother, Moh Seul-hee, cannot see why he would chase a dying woman whose husband is already with her. He insists the surgery will save Hae-in and wipe her bad memories so she can start over. Seul-hee warns that Hong Beom-seok is after his seat, Hong Beom-jun is courting directors, and the stockholders' meeting is close.

Eun-sung throws it back at her: if she had not abandoned her son, he would never have envied Hae-in or fallen for her. He will not stop until he dies, so she offers to help. The scene closes on Frankfurt, where episode 13's glimpse of it ended, and a card identifying the body near Sambang Reservoir as Pyeon Seong-uk.

Hae-in says no

Hae-in follows Hyun-woo on one of his morning outings and finds him praying. He did not pray for Heaven, he says, or even for her memories, only that she would have the surgery and live. She calls it a useless prayer. He has booked the appointment for after breakfast.

Instead they go to a field they passed on their honeymoon. They trade memories of a pub, a beer-fueled argument about acting cute, a two-hour sulk and a huge full moon. Then Hae-in explains her refusal. Memories are what she draws strength from and what make her who she is. After the surgery this field will be ordinary and he will be a stranger, so she would rather die as herself.

Hong Beom-ja scolds herself while driving, then asks Bixby for Yongdu-ri anyway. When Hong Soo-cheol catches her on Kim Yeong-song's doorstep with walnut cakes, she claims they are for her nephew and she has the wrong address. Yeong-song serves plum tea and fresh madeleines and explains that he works only as much as he must. Soo-cheol decides he has found his calling: he will stay here with Cheon Da-hye and Hong Geon-u, work little and be very happy. Beom-ja and Yeong-song doubt him, so he lists Beom-ja's handbags, ring and watch. Then his parents arrive.

In Germany, Hyun-woo tells Hae-in her family wants a video call. In Yongdu-ri, the family rehearses. Begging will not work on her. Someone offers a lesson from the pear orchard: in a blight year you spray anyway, at a loss, to save the roots. The plan assigns roles, down to a scolding father and a final offer that everyone die together.

On the call, the script collapses. A speech about forgetting the bad memories too, from someone who drinks to forget, convinces no one. Someone takes the blame for keeping the side effect secret. Someone else reveals that every hospital they contacted had already heard from Hyun-woo, who sent hundreds of emails and called through the night.

Hae-in answers gently. As things stand, they will remember her as a daughter who fought with them and then made peace; after the surgery that daughter may be gone. She apologizes, and the call ends. Someone asks their dad whether he is crying. He is, and soon the whole room is.

Outside, Da-hye is walking Geon-u when Seul-hee appears. Seul-hee's advice is to stop trying to change and keep scamming, or that family will be hurt. She wants the USB Da-hye took from a man named Jun-ho, and Da-hye gone with her son. Da-hye counters that if Seul-hee touches Soo-cheol or the family, the USB goes to the police or the prosecution, and they sink together.

Seul-hee asks who would raise Geon-u then, and whether this family would keep a child who is not theirs. Kim Seon-hwa arrives, fussing about Geon-u in the cold. Asked whether she knows who Da-hye really is, Seon-hwa says it does not matter: her son will not let her go.

Hae-in prays alone: she has two treasures left, the memories of loving and of being loved, and she asks only to keep them to the end. Hyun-woo has heard, and he apologizes. She tells him not to make her want to live. He answers that even as a stranger, he will be the first person she meets, and she will fall for him again. If she ignores or dislikes him, he stays anyway; he promised. He only asks her to stop praying about dying, because he is afraid it will come true.

Warnings from every side

At breakfast, Hyun-woo drinks espresso, reads an English paper and rolls his sleeves to show off his forearms. He admits it is on purpose. Hae-in asks whether he feels free to show off because their marriage is not registered. Then she reminds him he is married and orders the sleeves down and the scrambled eggs eaten. He refuses: he means to make leaving him unbearable.

Detectives get a DNA result: the victim's blood is on a car seat and the weapon, and the prints point to a suspect the detectives do not name aloud. At Queens Group, staff mourn the vanished coffee machine and Yakult. Secretary Kim Min-gyu, needled for helping the current management, says his reward feels bad because Director Baek forgave him and even paid his sibling's tuition. Then his phone rings, and the news that Pyeon has been murdered is passed on to someone who has left for Germany. A detective reports that the suspect fled to Frankfurt; his superior wants a warrant and no leaks.

Seul-hee tells Grace Ko she met Da-hye and has called Jun-ho. The men recently sent to Germany will not be coming back, and Grace is to wire them money and find them a place to stay. Alone, Grace calls herself by her real name, Ko Jeong-ja, and admits she suspects Hae-in is the target. On-screen text reads 60,000,000,000 WON. She tells herself to forget it, then makes a call anyway: just hello, are you all well, stay safe until you return.

A crash changes her mind

On a street, Hyun-woo is screaming Hae-in's name at a wrecked car. Someone phones in what looks like a hit-and-run, and bystanders shout that the car could explode. Then Hae-in calls his name. He has smashed the window with his bare hand, and she is furious about it. He thought she was dead.

In the emergency room, she explains that she was out of the car and shows him something she bought a second time, just as pricey, and says it saved her life. She asks whether he would sob like that if she died. When he says of course, she decides that will not do: women would line up for a man like him, and she will not allow it from her grave. "I'll get the surgery," she tells him, terrified but unwilling to lose him or see him cry. She won him by promising never to make him cry, and it is time she kept it. He promises she will never lose herself, and she trusts him.

In Yongdu-ri, Baek Mi-seon talks with someone who says the building was always their turf. She thinks she is getting divorced: her husband abroad has no end date for his doctorate, their son is overseas, and an American woman answered his phone late at night. A card for the HAIRSTYLIST AWARDS flashes as she says she must stay here. The building is promptly hers.

With Baek Du-gwan at the market, Soo-cheol runs the Yongdu-ri Supermarket. Someone compares it to the variety show Unexpected Business, and he leans in. He sells snow crab ramyeon with abalone for 3,500 won, crabs shipped express from Uljin. Profit is not the point; Chapter One of The Neighborhood Business King, a book he plans to write, is about asking neighbors for love. The village floods in, calls him In-sung, and empties the ramyeon aisle.

The sums are grim: the store is in debt. Someone recalls a parent's parting apology from episode 13, about leaving him behind like trash after a trip, and takes it as a warning. His loss leader has a flaw, since ramyeon is the priciest food they sell. Soo-cheol says he resigned to take responsibility and refuses to go back to Seoul. He wants farmers and big marts to coexist.

A caller tells Da-hye that taking a passport did not stop the trip to Korea. Seul-hee has said where she is hiding. If she wants to save Soo-cheol, she must bring everything she stole to an address.

Soo-cheol, Da-hye and Geon-u go to an amusement park with gimbap. Da-hye sends Soo-cheol for coffee, and when he returns she is gone. An announcement summons the wife of Mr. Hong Soo-cheol, 31, to the Lost Children Center. He pleads for her not to leave. When strangers decide he must be a loser, Da-hye's voice cuts in: her husband is the most amazing man there is. Afterwards, one of them says the other is making it hard to leave.

The last night before surgery

On their last night in Germany, Hae-in invites Hyun-woo to unload every complaint, since she will forget them. He dodges, then admits she changes her mind a lot, as with anniversary surprises, and that he would like to be heard without her getting angry. She frowns while insisting she is listening.

Then he says he loves her and keeps going: thanks for her decision, no more sickness, trips, walks, fights and make-ups, growing old together. It is unfair that she will forget all this, she says. He will say it every day. She hands him what she has written about herself, about him and about her life. He is to give it back after the surgery and read it while he waits, without making himself sound better.

Back home, the family waits for the 10:00 a.m. operation in Germany. The news that Paengsun, the shell-less snail that seemed to be dying, is alive gets taken as a good sign.

At the hospital, Hae-in asks Hyun-woo to be there when she opens her eyes. Like a newly hatched duckling, she will trust whoever she sees first. He promises to stay from the moment she wakes until she is sick of him. If she does not know him or treats him badly, "It won't be my first rodeo." She promises to come back.

Arrested at the door

Cards read HAE-IN HONG, IN SURGERY, then IN RECOVERY. A man introducing himself as Detective Kang Min-wook of the German police arrests Hyun-woo for the murder of Pyeon. Hyun-woo begs for thirty minutes; his wife is in surgery and he promised to be there. Eun-sung steps up and offers to act as her guardian. Asked if this is his scheme, he says he is only protecting the woman he calls his from a criminal. Hyun-woo is taken away calling Hae-in's name.

In Korea, the news reports that Baek, former director of the Queens Legal Team, has been arrested in Frankfurt in the Sambang Reservoir murder. Someone realizes nobody knows who is with Hae-in. The phone goes to Beom-jun, and Eun-sung answers: he is by her side and the surgery went well. Then he tells Beom-jun not to bother coming. He waited until Chairman Hong's funeral was over, but prosecutors will soon investigate Beom-jun's embezzlement and malpractice, so he cannot leave the country. Eun-sung will bring Hae-in home himself.

A montage of earlier moments replays. Hyun-woo's episode 12 request that she withdraw the divorce is cut together with lines from past episodes: his proposal, a promise to be by her side, and October 31 called a good date. A letter to Hae-in from the future is read in voice-over, promising she will be healthy and successful, with Hyun-woo by her side.

Hae-in wakes to Eun-sung, who tells her a tumor was removed and she asked him to be there. She says a name, Baek Hyun-woo. "That's the only name I remember." Eun-sung claims they started dating in college and still love each other. Baek Hyun-woo, he says, is her ex-husband, who deceived her, stalked her until recently, and has been arrested by Interpol for murder. She is stunned to learn she was ever married, and Eun-sung goes for the doctor.

Episode 13's talk about the balsam dye and the first snow replays. Somewhere, someone says she must be awake by now. Then the first snow falls, and a voice asks what is wrong and says it hurts.

In an undated flashback, Hae-in asks Hyun-woo how he memorized so much in law school. What he could not simply remember, he mumbled over and over, so in the exam he could recall his own voice. Asked why she wants to know, she says it is nothing and sends him to bed. Over the last images, a voice repeats his name with a reminder not to forget it.

Thoughts

The crash is a blunt instrument, but it works because the episode spends its first half letting Hae-in's refusal make sense. Her speech in the field is the best argument against the surgery the show could have written, and the family's disastrous video call proves nobody can out-argue her. What changes her mind is not logic but a man with an injured hand. Her reasoning, that other women would line up if he cried like that, is pure Hae-in: she agrees to live out of jealousy. Soo-cheol's snow crab ramyeon and Beom-ja's walnut cakes give the hour room to breathe, and Seon-hwa backing Da-hye without a second thought is the quiet surprise.

The cruel twist sits in the setup. Hae-in says it plainly at the hospital: she will trust whoever she sees first, and the arrest makes sure that person is Eun-sung. His lie is efficient, and it even explains away the one name she still has. That name is the hook. The law-school flashback hints she used Hyun-woo's mumbling trick on purpose, and I suspect the pained voice under the first snow is her body remembering what her mind cannot.

Hyun-woo is in custody on a murder charge and Beom-jun is grounded by the prosecution, so the rescue has to come from somewhere unexpected. I want to know whether those prints were planted, whether Grace's half-warning was meant for Hyun-woo, and how long Seul-hee's hint about Geon-u stays a hint.
