The episode opens on a childhood memory. Back in Gi-hun's old neighborhood, kids play a game called the Squid Game on a court drawn in the dirt in the shape of a squid. The attackers can only hop on one foot until they break through the squid's narrow "waist," and they win by stepping on the squid's head. The defenders win by shoving the attackers out of bounds, which the kids simply call dying. Young Gi-hun remembers winning as the best feeling in the world.

Decades later, Seong Gi-hun is a 47-year-old divorced dad from Ssangmun-dong who still lives with his mother, Oh Mal-soon, and survives on her small earnings from a market stall. It's his daughter Ga-yeong's birthday, and his mom sends him off with her bank card to buy the girl dinner. Gi-hun figures out the new PIN is Ga-yeong's birthday, pulls out the cash, and promptly bets it at the horse track. Against the odds, his numbers six and eight (June 8, Ga-yeong's birthday) come in, and he walks away with about 4.5 million won. His luck doesn't last. Loan sharks spot him on the street, and in the chaos a young woman bumps into him and snatches his winnings. The gangsters beat him and make him sign a waiver giving up the rights to his body, promising to take a kidney and an eye if he doesn't pay up within a month.

With almost nothing left, Gi-hun spends his last coins on a claw machine and wins Ga-yeong a toy gun that doubles as a lighter. He treats her to street-food tteokbokki, and she gently lets him know that her stepdad already took her out for steak. When he drops her off late, his ex-wife is cold with him, and the door shuts in his face.

At a subway station, a well-dressed stranger, the Recruiter, invites Gi-hun to play ddakji, where you throw a folded paper tile at your opponent's tile and try to flip it over. Every time Gi-hun wins he gets 100,000 won, but every time he loses he takes a slap to the face. After a long string of slaps, Gi-hun finally flips the tile and pockets his cash. The man then lists Gi-hun's whole life story, including his failed businesses and hundreds of millions of won in debt, and hands him a business card for a bigger game. Back home, Gi-hun learns that Ga-yeong's mother and stepfather are moving her to the United States next year. Unless he can show he has money to support her, he has no real shot at custody. He calls the number on the card, gives his name and a password, and is picked up by a van, where he's gassed unconscious.

Gi-hun wakes up in a huge dormitory full of bunk beds, wearing a green tracksuit with the number 456 on it. There are 456 players in total. He chats with Player 001, a frail old man who reveals he has a brain tumor, and he spots the pickpocket who robbed him: Player 067. When he confronts her, Player 101, a gangster who also has a score to settle with her, nearly starts a fight. Masked guards in pink jumpsuits arrive and explain that whoever survives six games over six days will win a huge cash prize. To prove a point, they read out players' debts, including that of Player 218, Cho Sang-woo, Gi-hun's childhood friend and the pride of Ssangmun-dong for getting into Seoul National University. Sang-woo embezzled his clients' money and lost billions. Everyone signs a consent form with three rules: you can't quit, refusing to play gets you eliminated, and the games can end if a majority votes to stop.

The first game is Red Light, Green Light, the same playground game everyone knows. A giant doll at the far end of a field sings a rhyme, and players can only move while it faces away. Anyone caught moving after it turns around is eliminated. When the first player is caught, he is shot dead, and panic breaks out. Players who try to run are cut down by snipers. Sang-woo quietly tells Gi-hun to hide behind other players so the doll can't spot him. When Gi-hun stumbles at the worst moment, a large man, Player 199, grabs him by the shirt and holds him steady. With seconds left on the clock, Gi-hun dashes over the finish line as the doll guns down everyone still on the field.
